Gigi Donnarumma picks up bizarre yellow card while Neymar implodes at referee and former Arsenal man Matteo Guendouzi as PSG lose their cool against Marseille

Paris Saint-Germain’s season was effective over weeks ago, but that did not stop a French derby against Marseille descending into chaos.

Neymar and Kylian Mbappe decided Le Classique 2-1 with goals either side of an equalizer from Croatian defender Duje Caleta-Car, but that far from tells the full story.

PSG entered the virtually meaningless game with a 12-point league lead over OM at the top of Ligue 1 in a season of ignominy headlined by another Champions League humiliation, this time at the hands of Karim Benzema and Real Madrid.

However, despite so little at stake, Le Classique still lived up to its chaotic reputation, with a number of flash points headlined by Neymer and goalkeeper Gigi Donnarumma, and also involving former Arsenal man Matteo Guendouzi.

Donnarumma, the free signing from AC Milan who downed England in the Euro 2020 final penalty shoot-out, moved to France with huge expectations, none of which he’s lived up to.

The Italian has received criticism for his role in a number of PSG’s poor displays this season, often losing his place to Champions League winning keeper Keylor Navas.

He started against Marseille, but had another night to forget, first completely botching a corner to allow Caleta-Car to equalize.

His Parisian teammates eventually bailed him out to secure the three points, but that did not stop another moment of embarrassment in stoppage-time when the 23-year-old picked up a bizarre booking.

Leaping out of his goalmouth to intercept a through-ball, Donnarumma took it round the on-rushing striker with confidence before then panicking.

With a player running to close him down, the keeper then booted the ball out of play, only to see it cannon straight back off the advertising hoarding and into his feet.

In a moment of panic he then tried to collect the ball as he ran back to his goal-line, only to pick up a yellow card for time wasting.

That wasn’t the only strange caution in the derby either, with Neymar also seeing yellow for losing his cool after appearing to take down ex-Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi.

Reacting as if he’d just seen red in the World Cup final, the Brazilian ran around in dramatic fashion, with a clearly amused Dimitri Payet struggling to calm him down.

The reason for Neymar’s fury was that he did not actually touch Guendouzi, with the Marseille man not only diving but then feigning injury as he lay writhing on the turf.

Neymar protested his innocence to the referee but essentially added his name to the official’s book due to his crazy reaction, as he also stormed over to Guendouzi to yell in the face of the France international who was still lying on the ground clutching his face injury.

The irony of Neymar being furious about an opponents’ play acting escapes nobody.

Unfortunately for Neymar, that includes his own supporters, as talkSPORT’s European football expert Kevin Hatchard explained a large section of the die hard PSG supporter have had enough of his antics.

“Neymar had his usual when he got involved with the Marseille players and there was an almighty scrap,” he said.

“This ties into this thing about the PSG ultras and how they view the behavior of people like Neymar, this kind of petulance and these kind of displays of aggravation do wind the ultras up.

“One of the ultra leaders said recently that it’s not just about salaries, it’s about the behavior, and if you take Neymar as an example – the Neymar Brazil see is not the Neymar PSG see.

“The ultras leader said PSG do not get the same guy who puts in starring performances for Brazil. PSG get this guy who is more interested in himself, more interested in scrapping with people and petulant behavior.

“That is all part of quite a grim picture, to be honest. Or, at least, that’s how some of the PSG fans see it. ”
