Manchester United knew ALL summer Frenkie de Jong didn’t want to leave Barcelona but still made Dutchman number one target and ‘hoped’ he’d change his mind… and they’re STILL choosing to pursue the midfielder along with Chelsea
- Manchester United and Chelsea will continue to monitor target Frenkie de Jong
- The transfer saga involving the midfielder continued throughout the summer
- It was eventually confirmed that the Dutchman would stay with Barcelona
Manchester United reportedly remained hopeful that Frenkie de Jong would change his mind on a summer switch right up until the final stages of the transfer window.
The transfer saga involving the Dutch midfielder was one of the most high-profile in the summer window before it was eventually confirmed that he would remain with the LaLiga giants.
De Jong was United’s number one target for most of the transfer window as the new boss Erik ten Hag was keen to be reunited with his former Ajax star.

It was reported that the Red Devils had a bid of around £64 million accepted with the Catalan giants keen to clear the books due to their financial restraints.
Thomas Tuchel’s Blues were said to have joined the chase once it was made clear that de Jong was not keen on heading to Old Trafford.
United, however, remained hopeful that the Dutchman would change his mind during the summer due to his ongoing situation at Barcelona, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.
De Jong was new United boss Erik ten Hag’s (pictured) top transfer target this summer
‘He’s happy with life in Barcelona, his girlfriend is happy there. He made it clear he wanted to stay,’ Romano said to Caught Offside as part of his column.
‘United were just hoping that Frenkie would change his mind. Sometimes to sign top players you need to be patient, to wait and see if Frenkie was going to change his mind.
‘But it never happened, and this is why they decided to invest big money on Casemiro.’
The Red Devils instead opted to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid to bolster their midfield
Despite intense interest from both clubs, de Jong was keen to remain with the club that he supported from a young age.
Both United and Chelsea may have failed to persuade the Holland international to join in the summer, but will be waiting patiently for de Jong should his stance change.
‘So far the situation is totally quiet. Frenkie wanted to stay at Barca and therefore there are no immediate updates,’ Romano added.
Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea also showed an interest in the Barcelona midfielder in the window
‘Certainly Man United and Chelsea will monitor the situation but they know that De Jong only wanted Barca with great clarity all summer. It will take months before we understand the next developments.
De Jong has only started once in the opening four LaLiga matches this season and had to settle for the final 27 minutes of Barca’s 3-0 victory over Sevilla on the weekend.
Manager Xavi appears invested in his three man midfield of Sergio Busquets, Pedri and Gavi – leaving De Jong on the outside and competing with Franck Kessie for extra minutes.
